Barış: As I said before, I really wanted my country to meet the world’s most sincere producer and and now I am on that job thanks to you. For this meeting, both sides must know each other. How would you like to explain yourself to someone who never knew you?
Olan: First off hey! Well the name is Olan, I’ve been making videos and comedy since 2004, What you see is what you get with me. I love nothing more than to watch movies and play videos. I hate parties, I do everything in my power to avoid them unless they have chicken tenders than it’s a different story. I have a dog named Tardis. I really don’t know what else to say haha!
Before the interview, I researched most of the time, but I could not find a title that brought our country and you side by side. Have you everattended an event in our country or have you had the opportunity to visit? What do you know about Turkey?
I’ve never been to Turkey in my life, really I’ve only been to Germany and Canada as of now. But I’ve had Turkish coffee and it’s soooooo good. And every picture I’ve seen of it is spectacular it seems like a very beautiful place.
You don’t show but you are 33 years old and you draw a very happy profile everywhere. I met Olan Rogers on YouTube first actually. You have been on the Youtube platform since 2007 and now you have 1 million subscribers. What is Rogers doing on Youtube with 1M people? Can you talk about that?
I started uploading to Youtube just to have fun. Once I started my Olan Rogers channel it started to become an outlet to experiment with.
You have an interesting concept on Youtube. You’re telling stories to your subscribers. You touched almost every topic and you have an epic story in every topic. Where did you come up with the idea of such a story? Do you have a favorite story?
Those stories on my Youtube are real. They actually happened to me and my favorite would be The Comeback Kid.
Final Space was the first fruit of these stories and their short films and animations on Youtube. 4 years ago, TBS bought only a “cartoon pilot” project on youtube and you gift us a great production. You announced the news again on Yotube. Can you tell us what happened on the first day you got the news? You’ve probably been proud of yourself as we do now.
Well I sold the show in August of 2016 so I had to wait months on this deal closing. So I didn’t really feel like I could celebrate until the deal was closed on Oct. 25th. And it was a feeling of utter shock. Still shocked by it till this day.
Were you expecting an offer such as this? Or did you upload it on YouTube to get an offer? Because this project was a ”failure” for you at first. You used the following sentence in your previous interview “It was like three of probably the worst animated videos probably ever. They were pretty awful. It was just like an After Effects project, it was just gliding across the screen. From there, I just shelved it because I didn’t know anything about animation but I loved it”.
Well Gary Space was pretty awful. It was just so bad. I was really just playing around and it didn’t have any story but then in 2015 I had the opportunity to make something real. I knew I was another shot at making something animated so I revamped Gary Space with an actually story and thus Final Space was born.
When you got the offer, did you said, “Wait a minute! We were doing this just for fun!” or it was a seasonal scenario already ready for you when the offer came?
The idea was to always make it into a TV show.
The right to publish your project is now on the Adult Swim channel. The TBS era seems to be over. Did they ask you to change things before publishing on TBS?
Well it was TBS’s idea to make the move to adult swim just because it did better there, here in the states. I was always done for it, adult swim is known for animation. And all the character are owned by TBS.
Let’s talk a little more about the content of the show. You did a tremendous job. Literally, admirable. It is by far Netflix’s best original animation project. Are you satisfied with the first two seasons? If you were given a time machine, would you like to change a moment in the show?
I’m really proud of the first two seasons I think both season had their flaws but with the resources we had that’s the best we could do. I could go on forever about things I would want to change but I’ll just say I would of tones down Gary a tad in the first few episodes of the season
We would also like to talk about “emotionality” which is quite intense compared to a cartoon show. The conversations between HUE and Gary in the space seemed very sad to us. It can also be from perfection in the voicing of HUE. How did the idea of starting the department with those talks come about? Have you had trouble balancing drama action and comedy? You probably threw a lot of paper.
The idea for HUE came from my love for 2001 Space Odyssey and the tone is very hard to manage. But we try our best to be sincere in the emotion were putting up on screen.
I have a question about Gary and his father’s relationship. Is the “pride” and “longing” relationship here related to Rogers in real life? We have seen a similar relationship between Avocato and Little Cato. Do you talk about your dad or family. And also, when Gary spoke his feelings with Quinn, we have seen the one who tells stories on YouTube. Can we say that “Olan Rogers is Gary in this drama”?
I try to put a lot of myself in Gary. The relationship between my dad and me is actually great, wasn’t always that way but I have a great dad and mom. I was lucky to have both of them.
Did you make a decision as a result of pressure in the second season on the comments that came after the first season? Who came up with the idea to bring Avocato once more and kill him once more? Were there any other decisions you made on behalf of your fans? Do you have plans to kill someone again in 3d season:)
We’ve had a lot of this planned for awhile. We actually have to map out these things so we kind of know where we’re going. And don’t want to spoil any of season 3 for you haha

The most challenging part?
Most challenging part in that episode was trying to make sure every moment landed, we probably tried every variation moving things around and around.

My last question about Final Space is about your nomination. As a voice actor, you opened the door of Emmy and your first nomination came. I hope you win candidacy. Isn’t it unfair that Final Space is not nominated for the best animation?
No I don’t think it’s unfair, it’s all a popularity contest and the shows that have been around the longest usually win. It is what it is.

Olan: Öncelikle merhabalar! Adım Olan. 2004’ten beri videolar ve komedi yapıyorum. Benim ürettiğim her şey beni yansıtıyor aslında. Film izlemek ve video oynatmaktan başka hiçbir şeyi sevmiyorum. Partilerden nefret ediyorum, zorunda olmadığım müddetçe kaçınmak için elimden gelen her şeyi yapıyorum. Parmak tavuklardan varsa giderim sadece, ama o da bambaşka bir hikaye. Tardis adında bir de köpeğim var.
Röportaj öncesi araştırmamı yaptım ve sanırım Türkiye ve seni bir araya getiren ilk etkinlik bu. Daha önce ziyaret etme fırsatı bulmuş muydun ülkemizi veyahut herhangi bir etkinliğe katılmış mıydın? Ülkemize dair neler biliyorsun?
Daha önce Almanya ve Kanada’da bulunma fırsatı bulundum ama Türkiye’de daha önce bulunmadım. Türk kahvesi içtim ve çooook iyi olduğunu söyleyebilirim. Gördüğüm muhteşem fotoğraflara bakılırsa da gerçekten güzel gözüküyor.
Hiç göstermiyorsun ama 33 yaşındasın. Çok mutlu bir profile sahipsin aynı zamanda. Ben seni ilk kez YouTube’da tanıdım. Açıkçası YouTube senin yerin. Mükemmel bir karaktere sahipsin ve doğal bir şekilde kendini oynuyorsun. Olan Rogers ismiyle 1 milyon aboneye ulaştın. 1 milyon kişiyle YouTube’da ne yapıyorsun? Bir de YouTube kanalı açma sebebin neydi?
Aslında sadece eğlenmek amaçlı açmıştım kanalı ama benim için bir çıkış noktası olmaya başladı. Ben de avantajı kullandım.
Anlatmış olduğun hikayelerin ve YouTube kanalının ilk meyvesi Final Space oldu. 4 yıl önce TBS projeni satın aldı ve bizlere güzel bir yapım hediye etti. Haberi aldığın ilk günde neler oldu? Büyük ihtimal kendinle gurur duymuşsundur.
Şovu 2016 yılının Ağustos ayında sattım, bu yüzden bu anlaşma için aylarca beklemek zorunda kalmıştım. Anlaşma son haline gelene kadar kutlayacakmışım gibi hissetmedim ki 25 Ekim’de gerçekleşti. Tam bir şok hissiydi. Hala bu güne kadar şok içindeyim.
2011’de Gary fikrinden hoşlanmamıştın ama sonra 2015 yılında tekrar başlamaya karar verdiniz bu projeye. Bu sırada ne oldu da Final Space’te bir gelecek gördün?
Gary Space oldukça kötüydü. Çok kötüydü. Benim kafama göre takıldığım, etraflıca bir hikaye oluşturmadığım bir şeydi ama sonra 2015’te gerçek bir şey yapma fırsatım oldu. Animasyonlu bir şey yapma konusunda başka bir şansım olduğunu biliyordum, bu yüzden Gary Space’i yeniledim. Gerçek bir hikaye yazdım ve ortaya Final Space çıktı.
Projenizi yayınlama hakkı TBS’ten Adult Swim’e geçti. Dizi ilk başladığında kanal sizden belli değişiklikler yapmanızı istedi mi?
Aslında Adult Swim’e geçmek TBS’in fikriydi. Çünkü Adult Swim animasyon dizileriyle biliniyor, daha iyi reyting yapıyor. Bu yüzden bu fikre sıcak baktım ama karakterlerin hepsi hala TBS’e ait.
Dizinin içeriği hakkında konuşalım biraz. Muazzam bir iş yaptın. İlk iki sezondan memnun musun? Eğer sana bir zaman makinesi verilseydi, dizideki bir şeyi değiştirmek ister miydin?
İlk iki sezonla gerçekten gurur duyuyorum. Sanırım her iki sezonda da kusurlar var ancak sahip olduğumuz kaynaklarla yapabileceğimizin en iyisi buydu. Değiştirmek isteyeceğim şeyler hakkında sonsuza kadar konuşmaya devam edebilirim ama ben sadece Gary’nin ilk birkaç bölümünde ses tonunu biraz düşürürüm diyeceğim. Önceliği ona veriyorum.
1. sezondaki her bölüme Gary ve HUE arasındaki konuşmalarla başlama fikri nasıl ortaya çıktı? Drama, aksiyon ve komediyi dengelemek zor olmadı mı? Muhtemelen çok kağıt atmışsındır.
HUE fikri, 2001 Space Odyssey’e olan aşkımdan geldi ve tonunu yönetmek çok zordu. Ama duygularımızı en samimi şekilde ekrana yansıtmak için elimizden gelenin en iyisini yapmaya çalışıyoruz.
Gary ve babasının ilişkisi ile ilgili bir sorum var. Buradaki “gurur” ve “özlem” ilişkisi, gerçek hayattaki Rogers’la mı ilgili?
Gary’ye kendimden çok şey katmaya çalışıyorum. Babamla aramızdaki ilişki de aslında harika, her zaman böyle değildi ama benim harika bir babam ve annem var. İkisine de sahip olduğum için şanslıydım.
Salgın sebebiyle erteleme olacak mı?
Şu anda hazırlanıyor ve herhangi bir gecikme yok. Hala 2021’in başlarında yayınlanması bekleniyor.
